ALEKS and TSI Resources
The University of Texas at Dallas has two important assessments: ALEKS and TSI.
What is ALEKS?
ALEKS is a math assessment tool that helps you be placed in a math course where you will have the best chance to succeed. This assessment is required for all students and used for placement in your first math course here at UT Dallas.
What are the implications to ALEKS?
The ALEKS Math Placement Assessment determines which math courses you take. In practical terms, this equates to how much time and money you spend on your degree. In some cases, your score on ALEKS can reduce the number of courses you need to graduate. If you are still working toward ALEKS or if you are waiting to be placed into a math course, maximize your time by visiting additional campus resources, such as applying for internships or undergraduate research opportunities.
What is TSI?
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is mandated by the Texas Legislature to assess your college readiness in entry level coursework in English language arts and mathematics. Students who do not meet TSI exemption must take the TSI and obtain the minimum score to avoid course limitations upon registration.
What are the implications to TSI?
Not meeting TSI requirements in college may restrict enrollment in college-level courses depending on the TSI subject hold. This hold may require TSI retesting or developmental courses at a community college. In practical terms, this equates to how much time and money you spend on your degree.
What TSI resources does UT Dallas offer?
The Student Success Center at UT Dallas offers TSI resources for students in Peer Tutoring and the Writing Center to prepare for retaking the TSI Assessment. If you are still working toward TSI, maximize your time by visiting additional campus resources, such as applying for internships or undergraduate research opportunities.
